Sun Kissed: Too Much Or Too Little?

Sunlight helps in the production of melanin pigment in our skin. Melanin is required for the protection of skin cells from indirect DNA damage. However, too much sunlight is also harmful for our body and leads to tanning. But thanks to many natural remedies and tan removal treatments in Pune, that can restore the natural colour.

In this article, let’s look at the positives and negatives of sunlight on our bodies.

Here are the reasons why you have to enjoy a sunny day.

Production Of Vitamin D

Vitamin D consists of a lot of components for the proper functioning of the body. It is mainly known for bone formation. Too much exposure to sunlight can also cause tanning. Vitamin D also consists of components that protect our body from inflammation, improves the functioning of muscles and the brain. Lack of vitamin D can cause muscle pain, osteoporosis and easy fractures.

Sunlight is one major source that triggers the production of Vitamin D in our body. However, the UV rays of the sun are very harmful. Therefore, people are advised to go out for 20 to 30 minutes from 11 am to 3 pm.

Reduces Diseases & Boost Immunity

Sunlight can boost the immunity level in people and reduce a lot of diseases. Studies show that being exposed to bright sunlight can decrease the insulin level in a diabetic person by 1.27%. It can also improve the function of the islet cell and lower the triglycerides and insulin resistance.

Sunlight can also lower the blood pressure in a person. The nitric oxides stored in the skin causes the blood vessels to widen when exposed to the sun. This allows more oxides to move into the bloodstream of a person with high BP, stabilising them.

Lightens The Mood

Sunlight increases the production of serotonin in the brain which helps in mood enhancement.  This makes a person calmer and happy during sunny days. A good walk or exercise during a sunny day can relieve a lot of stress in a person. So sunlight is a free medication to all the bad moods of a person.

Too much of anything can be harmful and here what too much sunlight can do.

Skin Problems

Too much sunlight increases the production of melatonin, which leads to the darkening of skin or tanning. A lot of people voluntarily choose to have tans whereas, a lot of others go for tan removal treatment in Pune.

A lot of exposure to the sun can create a lead to other serious issues. Some of them are:

  1. Sunburn: The ultraviolet rays of the sun are the major reasons for sunburn. It causes the skin to turn red and painful with swelling and blisters in some of them. It is better to consult a doctor in such cases.
  2. Heat Rash: it is caused when the sweat glands are clogged with perspiration from the skin. Rashes develop at the folds of skin like elbow, groins, chests, etc. It can be improved by bathing in cool water, using calamine lotion. Cool compresses like menthol talcum powders leave coolness in the body.
  3. Skin Cancer: There are three common skin cancers. In Basal cell carcinoma, the skin becomes soft and red and the chances to get injured are more. Squamous cell carcinoma can easily spread to the lymph nodes and other organs. Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous as it can even spread to the brain, lungs and liver.
  4. Wrinkles: UV rays of the sun can damage the collagen and elastic tissues of the skin and it causes sagging. This can cause early signs of aging in a person.

Eye Injuries

Overexposure to the UV rays of the sun is very harmful to the eyes. It can increase the chances of eye cancers and cataracts. This is why small kids and babies are made to wear hats when they are outdoors.

Pterygium is the name given for the condition where a pinkish triangular tissue grows on the cornea of the eye. Overgrowth of this tissue demands surgery. It is common for people who spent long hours in the sun at noon.

Photo keratitis or snow blindness is a condition caused due to overexposure to the UV rays of sunlight. It is simply sunburn of the cornea and can even lead to the temporary loss of vision.

Dehydration

Sunlight can absorb the water in the body and can lead to dehydration and fatigue. This is just a temporary condition where a person can regain his strength by drinking a lot of water.

Conclusion

Thus, sunlight is important for a person. But too much of anything would be harmful and so does too little. So analyse how the sun affects you and act accordingly.
