How To Make The Most Of Your Garden Boundaries

When the correct style of boundary is chosen for a particular property, it can really increase the wow factor and give the property improved curb appeal. It is very desirable to encourage wildlife, especially birds, bees, and butterflies, into your garden. You can do this by planting lots of flowers at different times of the year, so that there is always food for the bees and butterflies.

Having a bird feeder and nesting boxes will entice your indigenous birds into your garden but make sure that you are offering the correct foods as different birds have different diets.

Hedging & Trees

There are some real benefits to using hedging or trees as a boundary edge. The main benefits are that they are pleasing to the eye and that they encourage wildlife into your garden to thrive, nest and shelter.

They also are beneficial to other plants as they give protection from harsh sunlight as well as from bad weather.

Though there is a lot of maintenance required for both, trees will probably require the services of a tree surgeon or a qualified and fully insured gardener for when they need reshaping or the tops require trimming due to their height. With hedges, you will need to trim them back regularly, so again the services of a fully insured gardener will be needed.

However, if you have a small garden, you may not be looking to have either trees or hedging as your boundary edging as both of these encroach width-ways as they grow and will make your garden even smaller.

Chain & Wire Fencing

Chain and wire fencing is a good way to go if you have a small garden and get on well with your neighbors. These fencing types are easy to repair by using good quality wire which can be purchased from reputable businesses. There are many different gauge wires available.

If you have some fantastic country views, having chain or wire fencing can give you a perfect boundary to your property without distracting the eye from your desirable view. Another bonus to using wire fencing is that you can make it bespoke and to your own personal needs. However, they do not offer any protection for plants, though you could, if you wished, train certain types of plants to grow up them, which could be very pleasing to the eye and give shelter to and encourage wildlife.

Panel & Trellis Fencing

A much more common style of fencing is that of the wooden panel or trellis styles. These also need regular maintenance as they need protection from the weather by way of sealants and should really be painted or stained yearly to keep them in the peak of condition. However, they are very susceptible to damage in high winds and can be expensive to replace as they are not able to be repaired.

Though these styles can offer shelter to your plants from the sun, they are not so good for wildlife, especially the panel fencing, and they can cause a lot of damage when blown over.
